DISCOVER - what?  MEANING AND PURPOSE

You'll notice that I don't talk much about reaching financial goals or happiness as such on this site.  This is because I consider these things the consequence of a life of living true to one's values and beliefs, finding purpose and striving.  The natural state of a human being is to strive.  If your purpose provides a genuinely positive utility and helps society progress, then you will be amply rewarded for that with financial success.  However, making a bottom line, a dollar value the principal driver of your life, will not deliver you contentment.  As a Doctor I quickly learned this as I saw rich people and poor people choosing to suicide.  Think - purpose beyond profit.  Remember, money can be a con.  Don't let yourself be part of a machine.  How do you think you'll feel with more money, and if that feeling is simply a state of mind, perhaps you can get to that feeling without so much money.  The journey counts, tread gently.  A young Indian Doctor gave me a phrase that capitulates the dangers of worshiping money.  He said to me, Floyd, in my country there is a saying "Chains of gold are as heavy as chains of iron".

If you're questioning all of this, and saying - "this Floyd guy, I think he's a hippy", then consider the rise of the "B-Corp" - companies which strive to place the environment, community and staff at the forefront of their purpose.  Ironically, over the longer term, these companies are proving to outperform more traditional businesses which have short term focuses and place shareholder profit above all else.  Thriving businesses of the future will attract a talent pool by properly aligning their values and beliefs and being attuned to the needs of a society striving towards betterment.  Summing up, the modern worker is thankfully environmentally and socially conscious and will look to their employer to demonstrate leadership this way.  However, you can't re-engineer or fabricate this stuff.  You, as a boss, have to find personal connection and true purpose, and thereby lead with vision influencing the DNA of your company as you go.

Point two - too much thought on being happy, am I happy?, what will make me happy? sometimes goes nowhere.  Define your values and beliefs and live true to those.  Set goals in accordance with those values and beliefs, and strive to attain those goals.  That's exhilarating and fun!  And along the way, you may just rather serendipitously find yourself smiling lots and laughing again, like you used to when you were a kid, and at that point you'll likely find yourself feeling "happy" as a byproduct of your correctly navigated journey.  Enjoy that feeling, but again don't obsess over getting there, because if you do, your high expectations will create a heaviness of mind that will overshadow the lightness of your inner pure laughter and delight.  It's an art to remain simple, and it requires wisdom to do so.
